The Way To A Cook’s Heart Is With A Knife… A post from Todd!

Posted by Erin (and sometimes The Todd) on Nov 20, 2009 in The Todd's View on Things

whoBut, which knife?  When Erin and I fell in love, she suspiciously encouraged my interest in cooking…luring me first with expensive pots and pans, and then came…the knives.  As an aspiring cook, I have to admit that the feel of cutting through a broccoli stalk with a sharp knife has a certain satisfaction to it.  Erin bought me Henckel knives (the “Pro” Series) and that’s the key.  The “Pro” Series have a lifetime warranty.  I must admit…I have been rough on them.  But even so, the shining implements of severage (Editor’s note: is that word?  If not, it should be.) are now battered and chipped .  I returned them to Henckel for repair according to the warranty, and they replaced all seven knives with new ones.

Here’s the killer: one of the knives was actually a Wusthof–Henckel didn’t even make it–and Henckel’s customer service shipped that knife to their competitor for me.  When is the last time you had service like that?

This holiday, when you’re presenting a gift to the one who cooks for you, remember that the cheapest one isn’t always a bargain.  Some things are worth investing in.  Give them a knife that’ll make you meals as long as you live.

Thank me later…Todd

$20.00 Thanksgiving Dinner at WalMart!

Posted by Erin (and sometimes The Todd) on Nov 20, 2009 in Unfiled Stuff

hamFriends at our local Foodbank say they haven’t seen this kind of demand for services in over 35 years…this isn’t a surprise to most of us.  Although the economy is getting better, most folks who have been impacted ran through savings and resources long ago.  I’m thrilled with WalMart’s guarantee of a $20.00 Thanksgiving Dinner for 8.  Here’s what you’ll get:

*One 12-pound Grade A turkey*
*Three 11 to 15.5-ounce cans Green Giant vegetables
*Two 14-ounce cans Ocean Spray cranberry sauce
*Three 6-ounce boxes of Stove Top stuffing
*One 5-pound bag of red potatoes
*One 12-count package of Sara Lee dinner rolls
*One 22-ounce pumpkin roll cake

The Todd and I have been saving to buy two of these to take to the Foodbank when we do our Thanksgiving shopping.  I think back on times I spent $20.00 for an appetizer and drink and didn’t think twice…to imagine you could supply a feast for a family for the same price?  Wow.

And for toys…

$5.00 off Playskool Mr. Potato Heads

$10.00 off the Hasbro Dance Cam

$10.00 off the Sit N’ Spin  (Editor’s note: really, an unfortunate name.  It sends our Producer Ben off into uncontrollable laughter when I say this on the air.)

Okay, this was a really long list, you still with me?  Big gold star on your forehead!  Now, just click through on Mr. Blue Flashing Box and you’re on your way!

Sneaky inside tip: remember to hit refresh and print each coupon twice!  I’ve had a couple of new readers ask about the widgit that Coupons.com downloads to print coupons for you.  The widget does nothing else, it will not increase your spam or add any spyware.  I’m very paranoid about adding anything to our system, so I tend to always err on the side of caution.

Click on Mr. Happy Blue Box and print your coupons!

Hurray, Black Friday! Um…what do I do with the kids?

Posted by Erin (and sometimes The Todd) on Nov 20, 2009 in Resources

whiningI have a long-standing policy with the twins: I don’t drag them from store to store all day, and they don’t set the paper towel aisle on fire when my back is turned.  From a radio standpoint, every one of us is up at 3am with you, I’m just the one announcing the bargains.  Kids uniformly look miserable, cry, drag on Mom’s hand and eventually collapse into what I like to call the Boneless Chicken in the middle of the store.  Sitters.com has an excellent article on what to Do With The Kids.

Sitters.com also encourages families to review these quick Black Friday planning tips:

Tip #1 – Create a game plan in advance and review it with your provider and your children. This should include discussion of your family’s normal morning routine, planned activities, emergency contact information, meals and snacks, any special instructions, and review of household rules.

Tip #2 – Work out the details of early morning arrivals so that children stay in bed and aren’t disturbed.

Tip #3 – Discuss a schedule of activities so that kids have fun and stay safe.

Tip #4 – Plan for your babysitter to stay an extra hour or two so that you have time to recover after a busy morning or day of shopping.

Click To Give

Posted by Erin (and sometimes The Todd) on Nov 20, 2009 in Activist Mom, Charities--what's your passion? Need one?

I told you about Click To Give yesterday–they have 5 different charities to pick from, I’m going to profile one a day until you find the one that means the most to you.  Simply put: you click on the site–you do not have to buy anything–and the advertising sponsor contributes money to your chosen cause.  100% of the sponsor’s money goes to the charity, which I love.  This goes with my personal “give every day” mantra.  It doesn’t have to be money to mean something…
