Free Park Days For Military Families!

Posted by Erin (and sometimes The Todd) on Apr 14, 2010 in Free-Bees Giveaways, Free-or Cheap-Family Fun

…and honey, you military families deserve it!  I had the honor of getting to know tons of amazing military folk when I worked in Norfolk/Virginia Beach.  These people sacrifice routinely to serve our country.  If you’ve got a military mom in your neighborhood, think about asking if she’d like her swamp cooler opened for summer, or the lawn mowed.  They’re such amazing women.  (And men, sorry!)

Throughout this year, members of the military and as many as three direct dependents can get single-day free admission to many of the SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment parks, including SeaWorld Orlando, San Diego, or San Antonio and Busch Gardens Tampa Bay or Williamsburg. Families with small children may enjoy Sesame Place, which is included as well. Go here for more information about this program, which also was offered last year.

Thanks, One Cheap Chick!

Cashing In Your Stuff

Posted by Erin (and sometimes The Todd) on Apr 11, 2010 in Resources, Working From Home

toddThe average US household has between $3,000 and $25,000 in stuff that isn’t being used, isn’t needed, but could still be very useful to someone else–and worth selling.  We hold “Todd’s Yard Sale” every year–over 100 families participate, along with a pile of clients who want to boost last season’s merchandise and lots of cute little charities and fundraising groups.  Ten thousand people drop by to snag a bargain.  If you’re not a local and can’t join us, but would like to cash out the clutter, here’s some ideas:

booksBooks, Cds, DVDs, and Video Games:  You’re going to want Amazon.com for these puppies.  Textbooks and recently published books sell like wildfire.  Amazon will charge a fee, but they handle the transaction for you.  Sneaky inside tip:  Price your stuff at a penny less than the lowest-priced item to be listed on top.  Be honest about the condition, seller report cards are important here.  If it’s new and in packaging list as such.  Sneaky inside tip #2:  When mailing your goods, send via “media mail,” this is about half the cost of regular first class mail!

babyfurnitureBaby Furniture and Gear, Toys: Once again, Craigslist.comDo make sure your stuff hasn’t been listed on a recall!  You can check that here–www.cpsc.gov.

appliancesHousehold Goods and Electronics: the old-fashioned Garage Sale is still your best bet–try to get your neighbors to be involved, multi-family yard sales are far more likely to see traffic.  Sneaky inside tip: Right now, yard-salers are snapping up frequently used items–hand mixers, bread makers, small tvs and such.  Group small items–like silver, dishes, frames or vases together for a faster sale.  List your sales date in free-bee listings like Craigslist, and be sure to use more signs with clear directions to get buyers to your location.

jeansClothes: as you might guess, eBay.  My fabulous stylist David gets all his Versace jeans and such from there for a fraction of their $1,200 price tag.  Sneaky inside tip: List your items for 7 days for the best exposure…and always, always include photos…be sure to list size, color, brand and if it’s new and still with tags, add “NWT” as well.

furnitureFurniture: I’m hearing the best buzz about Craigslist.com.  It’s free to list, no commission.  Sneaky inside tip:  Not sure how to price your goods?  Check out similar items on the site, then list yours at about 10 to 20% higher than you’re willing to part with them.  This gives you a little wiggle room on negotiations.  Once again, pictures, pictures, pictures.  List style, brand, condition, age, and dimensions.  Since you’re going local here, insist on cash.

realFor more ideas on where to sell your goods, hit the May edition of “Real Simple.”  Here’s a $1.00 off coupon.

What ARE Your Kids Watching? Reading? Hearing?

Posted by Erin (and sometimes The Todd) on Apr 11, 2010 in Activist Mom, Free-Bees Giveaways, Free-or Cheap-Family Fun

Common Sense Media

Scary, huh?  I still remember the first time my MacLean piped up with an exquisitely enunciated swear word he heard me use whilst cut off in traffic.  (Editor’s note: we almost went off the road!  I was distraught!  This isn’t usual!)  Anyway, our little sock monkeys are always listening, watching, recording with those devious little brains.  I’m very excited by Common Sense Media–it’s a free community that shares ideas and reviews on quality tv, books and films for kids.  It’s nice to be able to type in a movie and get a concensus on whether it’s age-appropriate.  But here’s something even nicer–sign up now and you’ll get a week’s free-bee subscription to Disney’s Digital Book program.  Once you’re a member, they’ll send you a code for a free week.  There’s no obligation, and you’re not expected to pay for anything.  (Editor’s note again: my Zachie’s plowing through “Treasure Island” with me at bedtime!)  Once again, Common Sense Media is free, so pop in and take a look around.

giftCongratulations to Carol Lewis, who wrote: “I did it!  It is Spring here. Have a lovely lilac branch in a vase by my kitchen sink so I can soak in the beautiful scent!”  Carol, I’m happy for you even though you have spring and we don’t!  Enjoy your $50.00 gift card to Target. I loved reading everyone’s comments about spring in your corner of the world–or lack thereof!

“It’s supposed to be 70 degrees here in Denver on Sunday and I’m looking forward to it”

Hello! Spring is coming, up here in VT. The robins are back and the daffodills are beginning to bloom around here and the days are getting longer. Thanks for having the contest!

Just subscribed. Also, I must be your neighbor in Dante’s 7th level. No spring here where I’m at either. It’s been so crazy that some of the trees don’t know what the heck to do. Bloom … don’t bloom…sunny day then days on days of cold and rain. Yay! for spring. LOL

“Green” Your Shopping

Posted by Erin (and sometimes The Todd) on Apr 10, 2010 in Organic Coupons & Deals

Just in time for Earth Day, retailers are rolling out a number of promotions involving reusable shopping bags. Here are a few of my favorites:

Babies R Us: Through April 22, get a free reusable shopping bag and get 25 percent off all the apparel and shoes you can fit inside. Go here for details of this offer. Bags are while supplies last.

Smith’s Food & Drug: Design a shopping bag for this grocery chain (or any other Kroger store) using some easy online tools, and you could win a prize in the company’s contest. Go here for more information.

Target Stores: Get a free reusable bag made from recycled materials with any purchase, while supplies last, on April 18. The giveaway is part of a broader effort that includes in-store recycling centers. Go here for more information.

Thanks, One Cheap Chick!

Get The Kids OUT Of The House This Weekend…

Posted by Erin (and sometimes The Todd) on Apr 9, 2010 in Free-Bees Giveaways, Free-or Cheap-Family Fun

…and locals, there’s a pile of fun free-bees for us:

Kid-Flix-Mix-(use-this-one)-Children’s Short Film Festival, courtesy of the Salt Lake Film Society and Sorenson Unity Center on Saturday.  These sweet flicks start at 10am, it’s free and open to the public.  Sneaky inside tip:  this is popular, and first come, first seated.  1383 South 900 West in SLC

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has a fun free-bee tomorrow (4.10).  There’s  a special mountain goat viewing where you can see and learn more about the goats, at the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon.  DWR biologists will be on hand to answer questions and provide scopes and binoculars.  There will also be other children’s activities as part of the event.  9:00 am to 3:00 pm– it’s held at the Park-and-Ride lot at the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon in Salt Lake County.

libraryAt the outrageously gorgeous Salt Lake City Main Library, there’s free-bee crafts every second Saturday.  Tomorrow is Springtime Craft Day–2:00 pm to 3:00 pm, 210 E. 400 S.  Salt Lake City.  For more info, head here.

loringAnd at the Salt Lake City Art Center, second Saturday is free-bee family Art Activity Day.  “Shell Out” Kids and their families are invited to create their own blue-on-white Delftware-style seashells, inspired by the work of Robert Loring.  2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at 20 South West Temple in Salt Lake City, UT.

Thanks for this excellent roundup, My Kids Eye View!

Layton
968 North Main Street
Layton, UT 84041
Phone: 801-497-9001
