Free “Thank You Note” Printables For Kids

Posted by Erin (and sometimes The Todd) on Feb 28, 2012 in Free-Bees Giveaways, Free-or Cheap-Family Fun

My mother was fairly ruthless about making us write “Thank You” notes, so I in turn terrorized the twins into writing a prompt thank-you for gifts and such.  I did cheat and buy bright, fun cards that took a little of the effort out of it.  Here’s an even thriftier option: free printables from New Season Design.  Click here to download.

Posted by Erin (and sometimes The Todd) on Jan 26, 2012 in Free-Bees Giveaways, Free-or Cheap-Family Fun

I love this book–I’m embarrassed to admit that we’ve been through three of them.  The twins have used them for homework, for photo inspiration, and The Todd and I have thumbed one half to death dreaming of another trip up north.  (We went to Juneau for our honeymoon 16 years ago and have dreamt of going back ever since.)  The guide also has piles of discounts and resources.  Order yours free by clicking on Mr. Moose.

Hey, Locals–Get Free “Disney On Ice” Tickets Today

Posted by Erin (and sometimes The Todd) on Jan 23, 2012 in Free-or Cheap-Family Fun

The new Disney On Ice–your Toy Story characters!–hits the Delta Center in SLC March 7-11.  Pick up a FREE tickets today (Monday, 1.23) by doing this: head for the Delta Center (301 West South Temple) between 11am and noon.  The first 500 people to bring a new children’s boook get a free Disney On Ice ticket in return.  It’s one ticket per book, so I’d suggest grabbing a couple of friends and extra books to get enough tickets for the whole family.  The books go to low-income families and preschools throughout Salt Lake City.  You get to see Disney On Ice free AND do a good deed at the same time.  Nice, eh?

(Editor’s note: for the well-meaning who will attempt to correct me with the new name for Delta Center–don’t bother.  I’m never going to publicize a company that saturates our state with high-level nuclear waste.)

I LOVE this–I suck at math, so Zachie and MacLean know better than to even ask me anymore.  (Editor’s note: I actually had to call my engineer brother to get an answer for fourth grade math.  THAT’S how much I suck.)  iTunes is offering “Math Farm” free for a limited time.  It’s a fun little interactive game that teaches addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  It’s good for your iPhone or iPad.  Download it free by clicking here.

I LOVE this–see how trees are decorated all over the world in honor of Christmas with the “Trees of Diversity” show in West Valley City.  It’s fascinating to see how different cultures interpret the same Holiday.  Admission is free and the event runs through 12.29.  Go here for more info.

Monday 12-19:

Free parking and a holiday treat is provided, and prizes such as free tickets to a Bees game and coupons good at Megaplex Theatres, Miller Motorsports Park and Fanzz stores will be handed out while supplies last. Sensory Friendly Films

Posted by Erin (and sometimes The Todd) on Nov 16, 2011 in Activist Mom, Resources

This sweet service came to mind today because a local college threw a family with a child with special needs out of a symphony performance.  I’ve heard so many stories from the Autism Moms about the challenges of taking a little one to a movie or live performance.  The lights may be too bright, the sound too loud, or others in the audience may not be willing to be patient with a child who’d like to dance in the aisle.

Thanks to AMC’s Sensory Friendly Films, children with special needs have a chance to enjoy new releases, too.  The sound is turned down, the lights do not go out completely, and no one’s going to screech “down in front!” if your little person wants to wander.  Up next is a special showing of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part One” on November 30th.  Find your closest participating theatre here.

In December, look for a showing of the new “Muppet Movie” on Saturday, 12.3.  Find your closest location here.

The Natural History Museum of Utah is offering free admission on Nov. 18. That’s the day the museum opens in its new building in Salt Lake City. You must, however, reserve free tickets online starting Nov. 11 for the grand opening. For more information, call 801-581-4303.

The Utah Museum of Fine Arts in Salt Lake City offers free admission on the first Wednesday of the month. The museum also has free admission the third Saturday of each month. Admission is always free to active members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard, or Reserve.

Operation Baby Bundle

There’s nothing more wonderful to me than a new life being welcomed into the world.  But we all know that not every newborn has everything they need.  We at B98.7 are thrilled to be teaming with KUTV2 and the March Of Dimes for Operation Baby Bundle.  This drive benefits the Teddy Bear Den–which is an amazing program for mothers at risk.  Pregnant and new mommies “earn” points by finishing school, stopping smoking, attending parenting classes, etc.  They can then “spend” their points at the Teddy Bear Den for what their little one needs–diapers, wipes, warm clothing, etc.

We’re asking for your help–please donate to OBB at any Dan’s Foods location through Sunday, 11.6.  Find your closest location here.  If you don’t want to put something together, each store will have tidy little bundles available for sale for $9.87.  Buy one, drop it in the donor bin, you’re done!  You can learn more about the Teddy Bear Den program here.

Here’s a list of the most needed items:

  • WARM clothing, coats, mittens, socks, hats, sleepers sizes Newborn-T2
  • Diapers–all sizes
  • Diaper wipes
  • Clothing, especially boys–sizes Newborn-T2
  • Grooming items like shampoo, baby powder, diaper rash ointment, nail clippers
  • Car seats
  • Strollers
  • Blankets

Last year, my dear friend Karen sailed into the store with half a dozen quilts she’s made for these babies.  It still makes me smile to think of little ones snuggled under a hand-made blanket.

Halloween Decor costs KILLING you? Then, let’s get “super crafty” with Todd!

Posted by Erin (and sometimes The Todd) on Oct 3, 2011 in Free-or Cheap-Family Fun, Resources

If you looked out the window at our house on Halloween night, you’d see the Dark Holiday of your childhood–50 kids at a time crossing the street, darting from door to door.  Last year we had around 400 junior spooks–I think they’re busing them in from Wyoming.   Halloween 2010 only fanned my ambitions to be The Scariest House On The Block.

“Build it, don’t buy it” is our new mantra at the Collard household.  Store bought tombstones (the good ones) run between $20.00 and $45.00 apiece, and they’re small.  Let’s go:

Home supply store rigid foam insulation sheets to start–about 4×8 sized sheets are best.  They come in various thicknesses and cost $6-9.00 apiece.  If the tombstones are going against an exterior wall, you can go thin…if further down the lawn, I’d suggest a thicker sheet to stand up to the elements.   Each sheet should make around 6 tombstones.

t2

Step one: draw your designs on the foam.  Go simple–you can add balls, evil cherubs, gargoyles and other fancy bits from the Dollar Store afterwards.  Cut out with a serrated knife.

Step two: “age” the stones by shaving edges, creating cracks, etc.

t3

Step three: paint with LATEX primer (oil-based will eat the foam.)

t4

Step four: you can now use spray paint (which will not eat the foam because of the latex primer you applied) to coat the stones.  Shade the edges and the cracks with darker gray or black to highlight the aging on the stone.  Now, you can put your friend’s names on the stones, and finish with spanish moss, vines, and leaves secured with a glue gun.

t5

Step five: I attached a 2×4 on the back with adhesive (read the label to make sure it won’t eat the foam) and drilled holes for two or more large nails to drive the tombstones into the lawn.  The extra effort makes them sturdier and they’ll last several years.

t6

You can do it–and I can help!  Todd

(Editor’s note: if you end up doing this project, The Todd will show you how to turn your front yard into a full graveyard for a Halloween night photo-op later this month!)
