Control Your Financial Destiny

Posted by Erin (and sometimes The Todd) on Mar 8, 2010 in Free-Bees Giveaways, Resources

 Daily Worth

I’m a big believer in women taking control of their financial future.  Too many of us trust our partner to do the work…or maybe hold off on buying a house “till I get married”…or break out in a cold sweat when people start throwing around initials like 401K…IRA…529 College Plans.  You’re not expected to be born with this knowledge, I promise.  I subscribed to the the Daily Worth newsletter to see what they had to offer.  I love it.  There’s daily updates about simple ideas and plans to put into action.  If you’re just starting out, there’s a great tutorial, if you’re pretty savvy about your finances, there’s still a lot you may not have seen.  It’s a free-bee signup, go here to subscribe.

4 Books, 4 Bucks!

Posted by Erin (and sometimes The Todd) on Mar 8, 2010 in Recommendations, Resources

girlMy filthy love of books has already been well documented here on That Went Well, so you won’t be surprised that my tufted ears perked up with the new Paperback Book of the Month Club.  I picked up “Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,” “Under The Dome” (LOVE Stephen King!) “Julie and Julia” and “Flyaway.”  If I’d paid full retail, that would be $42.95.  I got ‘em for $4.00 with a free-bee overnight bag.  Sweet!

domeThere’s no automatic shipments here, where you have to go to the hassle of packing up a book you don’t want and sending it back.  They ask you to buy 2 more books sometime during the year.  I picked up “Irish Country Girl” for an additional $4.99.

Sooo…I got 5 bestsellers,  and an overnight bag.  Full retail?  $86.89.  I paid $8.99.  Hah!

So, Your Kid’s Been Diagnosed With Autism, Now What?

Posted by Erin (and sometimes The Todd) on Mar 7, 2010 in Activist Mom, Erin's Diatribes, Resources

autismI still remember when one of my most beloved girlies called me with her son’s diagnosis of Autism.  It was only 8 years ago, but when she asked the doctor what to do next, he shrugged his shoulders and said, “uh, sometimes speech therapy helps.”  For any other medical diagnosis, there’s an entire protocol ready for parents.  Most  Autism moms had to struggle to find connections and information.

Since early intervention is key to helping and often even recovering a child from a diagnosis of Autism, the Autism Speaks community’s created a free-bee “100 Day Kit,” which tells parents what to do, where to go, and most importantly helps them find their community so that they’re not alone.  You’re not alone!  Go here for the kit and more information.

Trying To Go Organic?

Posted by Erin (and sometimes The Todd) on Mar 1, 2010 in Organic Coupons & Deals, Resources

veggieEven little efforts will start adding up.  Type your zip code into the search engine at www.eatwellguide.org and it’ll tell you how to find nearby suppliers of organic and sustainably produced foods.

This is the time to start looking at community gardens if your little patch of land won’t support a vegetable patch.   Go to www.communitygarden.org for locations near you.  Even better, there’s support and advice for starting your own neighborhood cooperative!

I’ve posted about food co-ops before, but whenever I do the response is overwhelming positive from the That Went Well community.  Here’s a good way to find your local one: www.localharvest.org/food-coops/   Sneaky inside tip: this is a great way to find local farms and farmer’s markets as well.

Job Hunting?

Posted by Erin (and sometimes The Todd) on Feb 20, 2010 in Looking for Work Resources

jobGack!  It’s a job in of itself, isn’t it?  Almost as bad is sticking to a truly rotton job just to stay employed.  If there were other openings available, would you go for it? This is an interesting option: most of the online services are primarily designed to simply throw your resume out into the abyss and see who catches it.  Local Jobs is a clearinghouse of options–taking surveys to see what your skills and talents are, local openings you can apply to, national options and openings that you may not have considered.  It’s kind of like one stop shopping.  You can click here to give it a try.  Good luck!

Well, This Is Incredibly Annoying…

Posted by Erin (and sometimes The Todd) on Feb 17, 2010 in Resources

skimmerA friend of mine just got scammed out of $11,000 because he used his debit card at a gas station that had been “skimmed.”  High-tech thieves are putting devices called “skimmers” on ATMs and gas station pumps.  It’s hard to tell, especially if you’re not paying attention.  Here’s what to do:

–Take a quick look to make sure the card slot hasn’t been tampered with, like above.

–If you’re using your debit card, run it as a credit card purchase to avoid inputting your pin number.

–Use the ATM at a bank, rather than a convenience store–bank ATM’s will be better guarded.

–Register for online banking and check your statement daily.

Most skimmers are high-tech and internally placed nowdays.  Unfortunately, they’re also on the rise.  The US Secret Service reported a whopping 3,000 increase in skimming thefts last year.

Here’s a tip that I want you to PRINT OFF AND COMMIT TO MEMORY!!!

Posted by Erin (and sometimes The Todd) on Feb 6, 2010 in Free-Bees Giveaways, Resources

Not here to judge–but if you’ve had one too many rum and Diet Cokes during the Big Game Sunday, please have this information ready.

Travel-services agency AAA has a great free-bee offer for those who will be drinking during the Super Bowl. From 6 p.m. on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 7,  through 6 a.m. Feb. 8, AAA’s free ”Tipsy Tow” service will take anyone who has been drinking home for free and they’ll tow your car home along with you, too. (This offer is available to anyone as a public service, not just AAA members.) The trick is to party fairly close to home: The free tow service is available up to five miles. Party hosts, bartenders and restaurant managers are encouraged to keep the toll-free AAA number handy for those who don’t know about the service.

All you have to do is call 800-222-4357 (AAA-HELP) Tell the operator that you need a “tipsy tow.”    Sneaky inside tip: Keep in mind this is a one-way ride for a driver and a vehicle to the driver’s home. If there are additional passengers, they can be taken to the driver’s home, too, as long as there is sufficient room for them to ride safely in the tow truck.

Thanks, my dear One Cheap Chick!

shriekPhone Bills: Remember when everyone had just one number?  Hahahahah!  Those days are over, and for most of us, cellphones are necessity.  But there’s still lots of ways to save.

    1. Audit your bills: A recent study showed the average cell user could save a galactic $331.00 per year with a plan that matches up with your usage.  You can check www.billshrink.com for a free cell plan comparison.  Are there services you could live without?  Call-forwarding, etc.  Dump ‘em.

    2. Make the Big Move: Magic Jack is getting rave reviews from “Good Housekeeping” for ease of service and consistency.   We dropped our landline last year for Magic Jack and never regretted it.   Sneaky inside tip: the latest electronics show in Vegas also rolled out a Magic Jack feature that will allow you to make calls from your cell while at home using Magic Jack for free.  It’s killing the cell guys.  You can try out a risk-free 30 day free-bee  trial of Magic Jack here.   $

    3. You can download a Voice over Internet Protocol onto your home computer and call folks worldwide at no charge.  Most of the word getting out of Haiti for those first terrible hours after the earthquake was all skyped.  Quality isn’t great, a bit of a pain, but it’s free, baby!  Sign up at www.skype.com, www.lingo.com, or www.volp.com.

taxTax Bills: The average property tax bill and home valuation shot up 15% this year–even though we all know home prices have dropped like a rock.   Get a local realtor to give you valuations of homes that have sold in your area, compare to your home’s valuation and appeal.  75% of appeals result in a reduction of taxes!

Refinancing:  Look, make the suckiest economic period in 75 years work for you.  Interest rates are galactically low.  Do not agree to any up-front fees!   My personal favorite?  Paramount Equity Mortgage, 800.250.4000.  Ask for Dustin Dunaway.  He’s refinanced for us twice. I love him.  I am not getting paid to recommend him here.

Reduce Your Payments: If you’re struggling with your payments, you may be eligible for a Home Affordable Refinance or Modification.  It’s a federal program designed to help you.  Visit the site to see if you qualify: www.makinghomeaffordable.gov.

    installInsurance:

    1. Install safety devices: most insurers will offer 5-10% off a policy for homeowners who install deadbolts and smoke alarms.

    2. Boost your deductible: We increased ours from $250 to $1,000 and it knocked 30% off our policy.  The average homeowner files a claim only once every 10 years or so.  Save the moola!

remoteCable TV:  I’m not looking at you, I’m looking at me.  We have nearly every premium channel there is and we excuse it because “it’s our joooob!” to be “up” on every show on the planet, since we walk about them on our radio morning show.  Really?  Do we need every channel?

loyaltyLoyalty Means Nothing:  Sorry to sound cynical, but there’s no one, from your accountant to your cable provider who won’t try to drop their rates once you get a better bid from someone else.  Be brave.  Present the other offer, and bargain.  They won’t lower their prices voluntarily, just because you’ve been with them forever.  So make them.

$39.00 Flight Sale At Southwest Airlines

Posted by Erin (and sometimes The Todd) on Jan 13, 2010 in Resources

airplanesHot on the heels today from an announcement by several major airlines–including Delta and Continental–that they’re hiking baggage fees again  (Editor’s note: $25 for the first bag and $35 for the second, can you believe it?)  Southwest Airlines kicked off a Spring  Flight Sale–fares as low as $39.00 (one way) with 14 days advance booking.  Plus, no baggage fees!  Go here to check rates.

Update: just got off the phone with Southwest Customer Service and they said the $39.00 fares are mostly gone.  There are still several fare options I’m seeing as low as $51.00 (one way).  Take a look and see what works for you–and remember, no baggage fees…
